Visiting the Area
Royal Quays is located in North Shields on the edge of Newcastle, close to a bustling fishing quay and the seaside towns of Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and South Shields. Apart from the traditional British seaside amusements that these towns visit, North Shields is a gateway to the dramatic Northumbrian coastline with its edging of ancient castles and lighthouses, at Alnwick, Dunstanbrugh, Craster and Bamburgh to name but a few. Also the coast of Lindisfarne Castle and Priory on Holy Island.

Local Attractions

Hadrian’s Wall Segedunum
Of course everyone’s heard of Hadrian’s wall, but it’s time to re-examine this rather strange phenomenon. Most of us have seen some part of Hadrian’s Wall…some crumbled relic in the middle of nowhere. Generally, the British have misunderstood HW as a symbol of the oppression of the people of Northumberland and Scotland. Think again! - in fact, modern research has shown that not only did people live relatively peacefully either side of the border, but that the main purpose of major, fortified Camps was trade: comparable in fact to modern day shopping outlets!

Segedunum (4 miles from the ferry terminal) demonstrates this perfectly, as they recreate the Roman Bath House, and fort with a modern viewing tower. Carpe diem (seize the day) and make a visit.

The Blue Reef Aquarium
A captivating experience for children and adults alike, The Blue Reef aquarium is one of Europe’s premier aquarium experiences, as well as being a pioneering centre of breeding and research: so The Blue Reef is not only a must to visit, but something to be rather proud of. There’s plenty of rainy days, and this experience can’t be ruined by the weather. Sharks, Octopi, fish, crustaceans, and many other weird and wonderful creatures are featured here.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is not only breathtakingly beautiful, but mind bogglingly clever, as it rises to form two arches to let boats through. It is especially impressive at night with its blue neon lighting. Let’s not forget the bridge is just part of the millennium regeneration project, that's going to put Gateshead on the world map.

The Baltic Centre of Contemporary Arts is nearing completion and the Gateshead Centre will fast become the North’s premier music venue.

Whitley Bay
Whitley Bay is one of the most painted coastlines in the British Isles. The expressionists came here in their droves to paint that classic view of St Mary’s Light House. It was a popular Victorian holiday destination, and despite the lure of foreign climbs, it remains a top destination for eating, drinking, and sunbathing (weather permitting). On a hot day Whitley Bay can look like Cezanne painted it himself.

Souter Lighthouse

Souter Lighthouse is a picturesque example of coastal architecture, with beautiful, bleak surroundings. When it opened in 1871, it was the technical marvel of its day, running on alternating current.

It continues that innovation today with CCTV cameras allowing people who can’t access the top to still admire the view. There is also the “Compass Room”.
